OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company should pause training or deployment of increasingly capable artificial-intelligence systems when it cannot make a credible case for their controllability, monitoring and alignment with human intent. In a Fortune interview with Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell, Altman called a 10% chance of humanity being killed by the end of the decade unacceptable, while questioning whether such probabilities can be reliably calculated. He said OpenAI has paused training runs, would not rush to release its unreleased One Beyond model after it solved the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize problem, and would prioritize safety over short-term financial interests. OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar separately said, "We need to take safety seriously." Dario Amodei, Elon Musk and Altman have backed calls for an industry-wide slowdown, although the effect on OpenAI's or Anthropic's potential IPO timelines remains unclear.
