One in six workers in Britain pays personally for an AI tool used in their job, with annual spending approaching £1 billion. Deloitte's inaugural Generative AI Workplace Survey, conducted by Ipsos among about 25,000 UK workers, found that two-thirds had tried tools including ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, and nearly a quarter used them daily at work. Adoption is running ahead of employer provision: 31% said they used generative AI without their employer's knowledge, while 17% paid for at least one tool for work. Information searches, email drafting and content summaries were the most common uses, saving workers an average of 70 minutes a week. Deloitte said employers need practical guidance and safeguards alongside access to approved tools, as unapproved use creates data-governance, compliance and cybersecurity concerns. The latest account values the spending at about $1.3 billion, while an earlier account cited $1.4 billion using a stated exchange rate of $1 to £0.7417.
