South Korea may be nearing its first globally recognized blockbuster drug, with Celltrion’s autoimmune treatment Zymfentra and SK Biopharmaceuticals’ epilepsy drug Xcopri projected to generate more than $1 billion in annual sales in 2027. Parliamentary audit materials submitted by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute to Rep. Nam In-soon of the Democratic Party of Korea estimated 2027 sales of about 2.19 trillion won for Zymfentra and 1.44 trillion won for Xcopri. The figures are mechanical estimates based on each drug’s average growth rate over the past three years, not direct sales forecasts. Xcopri’s approval in Japan, where it will be sold as Exkopri, gives cenobamate regulatory clearance across South Korea, China and Japan. HK inno.N’s K-CAB and Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s Nabota are viewed as the next domestic candidates. None of the 44 South Korean-developed new drugs approved since 1999 has yet surpassed $1 billion in annual global sales.
