Samsung Group Cross-Company Labor Union’s Samsung chapter, the largest union at Samsung Electronics, approved a leniency petition for chapter Chairman Choi Seung-ho and five other executives referred to prosecutors on suspicion of violating the Personal Information Protection Act. The union began collecting electronic signatures from members on the 16th, targeting about 30,000 and budgeting roughly 20 million won ($14,000) for an online signature provider. The executives are accused of accessing department names, employee names and identification numbers without authorization while compiling a union blacklist tracking whether employees had joined a union. The campaign counters Samsung Electronics Labor Union Donghaeng’s petition, which the cross-company union says contains false claims and has drawn about 15,000 signatures seeking severe punishment. The dispute adds to tensions between the semiconductor-focused cross-company union and Donghaeng, which is based mainly in Samsung’s finished-products division. Donghaeng plans to hold a rally on the 18th near Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee’s residence in Hannam-dong, Seoul.
