Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukraine over record diesel prices, coinciding with reports that a Russian oligarch with ties to President Vladimir Putin paid for Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration, showed the Trump family was "in Putin’s pocket." Schumer said the timing was significant because the report emerged as Trump blamed Ukraine rather than the U.S.’s war with Iran for rising fuel costs. Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should stop attacking Russian diesel fuel, arguing the shortage was caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and that Ukraine had "plenty of other targets" besides Russian fuel infrastructure. AAA reported that U.S. gasoline averaged $4.3289 a gallon Tuesday, compared with $4.0704 a month earlier and $3.1777 a year earlier, while diesel reached a record $6.2694 a gallon, up from $3.6858 a year earlier. Brent crude was down 0.41% at $108.02 and WTI futures were down 0.13% at 104.74 at the time of writing. Goldman Sachs warned Brent could remain above $100 a barrel through the rest of 2026 if the Strait of Hormuz stayed closed for another month. Economist Justin Wolfers said the energy-price surge could spread from fuel and airfares into everyday goods as businesses stop treating higher costs as temporary. He also said the postwar deficit was the largest outside a war or recession and that there was "no appetite whatsoever for reducing the amount of borrowing." The Federal Reserve was due to announce its interest-rate decision Wednesday, with a 92.4% probability of a hike shown by the CME FedWatch tool. Wolfers said higher energy prices added pressure on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh and the Federal Reserve to raise rates because inflation appeared less clearly under control.
