Spain plans to invest more than €17 billion ($19.6 billion) in its electricity grid through 2030, about 30% above its initial plan, as electrification, renewable-energy growth and demand from large users such as data centers increase pressure on the network. Energy Minister Sara Aagesen said the investment is the largest in the country’s history and will support the 2023-2030 National Energy and Climate Plan. A public consultation found that general electricity demand represented 41% of connection proposals, followed by power-generation projects at 40% and energy storage at 19%. Spain will also publish rules for an auction-based capacity market covering generation and storage companies, as well as some customers, with payments for maintaining availability or reducing consumption during peak-demand and grid-stress events.
