The U.S. House has passed legislation authorizing the Trump administration to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil and gas, while requiring sanctions against senior Russian officials, oligarchs, state-owned companies and foreign businesses supporting Russia's defense industry. The measure passed 262-159 on Wednesday and now goes to President Donald Trump for signature. India said it would protect its trade and economic interests and energy security, while China opposed third-party interference in its trade with Russia. Nearly a dozen House Republicans privately sought removal of the tariff provisions over concerns they could raise prices before the midterms and broaden presidential trade powers. Democrats including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries also opposed the bill, while supporters in both parties said the authority is limited and structured. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer would determine the final tariff level.
