Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) renewed his criticism of President Donald Trump and Energy Secretary Chris Wright as the Iran war continued to drive higher fuel costs. Newsom’s Press Office used posts on X to accuse Wright of blaming California for a national gasoline-price spike and highlighted a Wall Street Journal report estimating that Americans had paid $100 billion in additional fuel costs since the conflict began in February 2026. National gasoline averaged $4.3672 per gallon and diesel $6.3103 on Wednesday, while California prices reached $6.0440 and $8.2668, respectively, according to AAA data. West Texas Intermediate fell 1.25% to $101.15 and Brent declined 1.67% to $104.06. Wright has blamed Newsom’s energy policies and California’s reliance on overseas oil, including imports from Iraq, for high costs and national security risks. The dispute also comes as Peter Navarro criticized Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, saying a 25-basis-point interest-rate increase would further hurt an economy already pressured by war-related energy costs.
