Tropical Smoothie Cafe unveiled a new visual identity as the Blackstone-owned chain prepares to exceed 1,800 locations by year-end, a 50% increase from its footprint at the end of 2022. The redesign includes bolder colors, standardized typography across packaging and digital platforms, and a frond-shaped symbol called the Palm T. CEO Max Wetzel said the rebrand reflects the company’s evolution and its planning for the next 3,000 cafes. Tropical Smoothie generated more than $1.6 billion in system sales in the 12 months ended in June, while loyalty membership rose 25% year over year to 13 million, with loyalty members placing about one-third of orders. A redesigned mobile app and website are scheduled to launch by year-end. The chain has also tested self-ordering kiosks and changed food and bowl preparation lines to reduce wait times and order errors. Blackstone acquired Tropical Smoothie in late 2024 in a deal valued at about $2 billion including debt, and Wetzel joined around then from CKE Restaurants. The company consolidated national and local media spending into an $80 million fund, helping lift brand awareness to 42% from 34% the prior year, according to Wetzel. Tropical Smoothie sees growth opportunities in the Midwest and Southwest and plans to expand outside the U.S. The expansion comes as restaurant operators compete for fewer customer visits amid pressure from higher gas, grocery and other household costs. Rival Smoothie King plans to add more than 200 locations and has more than 1,200 operating units. Executives at both chains have pointed to health-conscious eating and increased GLP-1 medication use as favorable trends. Wetzel said Tropical Smoothie is not currently pursuing an IPO but will assess options over time. Franchise disclosure documents show the company reported fiscal 2025 net income of $115.4 million on revenue of $131.4 million.
