ChatGPT is testing Sponsored Agents, clearly labeled business-sponsored conversations that users can start after clicking an ad, initially with select advertisers in the United States. Users can ask questions, explore products or services and visit a business website, while the sponsored interaction remains separate from ChatGPT’s independent responses and the user’s original conversation. Advertisers can use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT Work and the Ads Manager plugin to create, update and analyze campaigns. Ads Manager can generate campaign proposals from website content or marketing briefs, suggest copy and imagery based on landing pages and objectives, provide performance and targeting recommendations, adapt headlines and descriptions to conversational context, and translate ad copy into a user’s preferred language. OpenAI is also partnering with HubSpot, its first customer relationship management partner, and Shopify, its first ecommerce partner. The Shopify app will roll out internationally from September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads are available. The initiatives place OpenAI in a growing AI advertising market alongside Google, Meta and emerging AI search companies such as Perplexity, while raising the need to balance commercialization with user experience.
