Hyundai Motor, Kia and Hyundai Mobis have lost 100.1917 trillion won in combined market value over three months, falling 39.1% to 155.7496 trillion won on the 17th from 255.9413 trillion won on June 15. The selloff reflects the rapid unwinding of the growth premium tied to robotics and physical artificial intelligence, alongside investment burdens, accumulated losses, a stronger won and weaker global auto demand. Hyundai Motor's 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio fell to about nine to 10 times from 18 times in early June. Investors are now watching whether an appreciating yen can support a rebound by reducing Japanese automakers' currency-related price advantage in overseas markets. Hyundai Motor's shares have fallen 50% from their June 1 peak amid concerns over Boston Dynamics' delayed initial public offering, slower Atlas commercialization and rising research and development and facility costs. Boston Dynamics reported an operating loss of approximately 528.4 billion won last year, while cumulative losses reached 1.7 trillion won over five years. Analysts say the robotics unit's limited profitability and lengthy path to revenue remain major challenges, although a stronger yen could improve Hyundai Motor and Kia's relative competitiveness against Japanese rivals in North America.
