Canada and Germany announced funding of up to CAD $300 million for Montréal-based LawZero at ALL IN on Sept. 16, 2026, to develop Scientist AI, a safe-by-design artificial intelligence approach that treats reliability as a core capability. LawZero says the funding will expand its international scientific team, secure advanced computing infrastructure, open an office in Berlin and establish dedicated sovereign compute infrastructure in Canada with Hypertec and 5C. Scientist AI is designed to reason transparently and produce evidence-based outputs without pursuing its own goals, unlike current frontier AI systems built for autonomous action. LawZero says the system is intended to help provide guardrails for existing frontier models, accelerate scientific research and improve understanding of AI risks. The organization, founded by Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio, says the investment will support sovereign AI capacity in Canada and Europe while advancing safe-by-design research.
