South Korea detected 5,030 cases involving attempted illegal imports of weight-loss drugs including Mounjaro and Wegovy during January-August, far exceeding the 1,189 cases recorded throughout the previous year. The Korea Customs Service said it will strengthen inspections across all import routes, including travelers’ personal belongings, express shipments and international mail. Over the past three years, authorities recorded 6,223 obesity-treatment seizure cases, including 4,961 involving international mail. The agency also identified counterfeit Mounjaro products imported from India. Laboratory testing found inconsistent active-ingredient levels, unidentified impurities and distribution without a cold chain, while the trademark rights holder classified the products as counterfeit. Authorities warned that medicines from unverified sources may pose health risks and said imports that fail to meet requirements can be held, investigated and punished when smuggling is confirmed.
