South Korea and the United States are continuing negotiations on the implementation of Seoul’s $350 billion investment package after a trade deal lowered US tariffs on South Korean goods to 15%. President Lee Jae-myung said the final structure must respect corporate management decisions, ensure commercial rationality and protect South Korea’s national interests. Shipbuilding accounts for $150 billion, while the remaining $200 billion in strategic investments is still being defined. Projects under discussion include a 6.3-gigawatt Texas gas plant, up to eight US nuclear reactors, a possible Westinghouse stake, Alaska LNG, spent-fuel processing and carbon capture, utilisation and storage. Lee also said further semiconductor investment in the United States remained under debate. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are already pursuing major US projects, while unresolved investment conditions have delayed the final announcement and a planned parliamentary briefing.
