Novo Nordisk and Anthropic are partnering to apply artificial intelligence to drug discovery and software development, while Anthropic expands beyond computer-based analysis into physical biology. Novo Nordisk will pilot Anthropic’s Claude Science platform in biological-reasoning workflows selected by its scientists and computational science teams, and use frontier models for broader AI-driven software development under strict data governance and human oversight. Anthropic has established a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, conducts some experiments internally and uses external partners, and is exploring Claude-directed robotic experiments. The company is targeting rare, neglected or previously undruggable conditions through preclinical work, but is not conducting clinical trials or directly commercializing drugs. Financial terms of the Novo Nordisk partnership were not disclosed. Anthropic has acquired Coefficient Bio for approximately $400 million in stock, according to reports, added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board, introduced Claude Science and launched the Model Hardware Standard for operating laboratory equipment. The expansion comes amid concerns about biological misuse and existential AI risks, while Novo Nordisk faces potential early-2030s generic competition for Ozempic and Wegovy and stronger competition from Eli Lilly.
