Ethereum Institutional, a nonprofit co-founded by former Ethereum Foundation members, has backed Ethlabs’ EIP-8198 proposal to reduce Ethereum’s Layer 1 slot time from 12 seconds to 10 seconds. Known as Quick Slots, the proposal would introduce a one-time client refactor that replaces fixed timing assumptions with configurable parameters, allowing future reductions to be considered without a separate structural overhaul. Ethlabs, a nonprofit research and development lab launched on June 22, 2026, says roughly 20 ecosystem participants, including Lido and Ondo, support the plan without significant concerns over decentralization or validator participation. Supporters argue faster block production would reduce decentralized-exchange execution risk and, alongside FOCIL, improve transaction inclusion and censorship resistance. Hegotá is currently scheduled for 2027, after EIP-8198 was previously proposed for the upgrade at an Aug. 6 Ethereum core developers meeting.
