Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) and Rick Scott (R., Fla.) asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Amazon and Walmart over allegations that their AI shopping assistants steer consumers away from U.S.-made goods and fail to address potentially fraudulent Made in USA claims. The senators said Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping and Walmart’s Sparky AI provide uneven country-of-origin information and cited research concluding that both retailers can identify questionable labels but do not consistently use that capability. Amazon rejected the allegation that it intentionally withholds origin information, saying Alexa directs customers seeking those details to product pages. Walmart did not immediately comment, and the FTC declined comment. The request adds to scrutiny of the retailers’ marketplaces after FTC warning letters last year on third-party sellers’ origin claims and amid the agency’s antitrust case against Amazon. Amazon shares rose about 2.2% Thursday afternoon, while Walmart fell nearly 1%.
