Abra has expanded its relationship with Fireblocks to place a new class of yield-bearing digital assets, known as strategy tokens, into a regulated qualified custody structure. The arrangement centers on Fireblocks Trust Company, a limited-purpose trust company regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services. When Abra issues strategy tokens through its subsidiary AbraFi Labs Ltd., the assets are automatically routed into Fireblocks’ custody framework without manual intervention. Strategy tokens are synthetic assets embedded in smart contracts (self-executing blockchain code) that carry out predefined trading strategies to seek yield for holders. They are held in clients’ separately managed accounts, or SMAs, preserving Abra Capital Management’s fiduciary responsibilities and supporting its status as a Securities and Exchange Commission-registered investment adviser. The initial rollout will cover a select group of strategy tokens, with the scope expected to expand as the framework matures. Qualified custody requires client assets held by a qualified custodian when a registered investment adviser has custody, including potentially NYDFS-regulated trust companies. Fireblocks Trust Company uses MPC, or multi-party computation (shared private-key security), to prevent any single point of failure from compromising a wallet. Abra already used Fireblocks’ MPC infrastructure for its SMAs, allowing the integration to build on an existing technical foundation. Automatic custody placement at issuance removes human steps between token creation and custody, keeping the assets inside the regulatory perimeter from the outset.
