Starbucks agreed to settle a discrimination lawsuit filed by Florida last December, pledging not to use race- or sex-based quotas or preferences in hiring, promotion or pay decisions. The company will comply with Florida law, pay $1 million to the Florida Department of Legal Affairs for litigation costs and submit annual compliance certifications for four years. The agreement applies nationwide and also bars Starbucks from participating in organizations that require increasing the racial diversity of its board. Starbucks denied wrongdoing. The case is part of broader efforts by Republican officials, including in President Donald Trump's administration, to remove diversity, equity and inclusion programs from the private sector, government and education. A federal judge dismissed a similar Missouri lawsuit in February, and that state is appealing.
