OpenAI released Astra for Law, a legal-industry platform built on its GPT-6 Astra model to support legal research, opinion drafting, analytical work and custom applications. Its search index covers more than 230 million URLs, including U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, with CourtListener content from Free Law Project representing more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law. On Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law achieved a 54.0% correctness rate across 200 questions, compared with 38.7% for GPT-6 Astra using web search alone. OpenAI is making the platform available to legal technology providers including Harvey and Legora and plans integrations with Relativity, Clio, Intapp and Thomson Reuters. Selected firms will initially receive access through Trusted Access in ChatGPT and Codex, with privacy features including Zero Data Retention for eligible API customers and default exclusion of ChatGPT Enterprise usage from human review. The launch adds OpenAI to an intensifying legal AI competition involving Google and Anthropic, while concerns over fabricated cases and other reliability failures remain.
