MetaMask has introduced Added Protection in browser extension v13.45 to defend Ethereum and EVM (Ethereum-compatible execution environment) users against Red Pill attacks. The feature simulates a transaction before signing and makes the expected result a condition of execution: if the on-chain outcome differs from the preview, the transaction reverts automatically. MetaMask says this makes it the first self-custody wallet to enforce such a match. Users risk only the network gas fee for a failed attempt, while MetaMask charges no fee for the feature or the failed transaction. Added Protection is enabled by default but can be disabled on the confirmation screen. It is live across 13 EVM networks supporting smart accounts through EIP-7702, with mobile support to follow. The launch comes after MetaMask separated from Consensys to operate as an independent consumer company and as wallet providers expand defenses against on-chain scams. The protection is particularly relevant when users interact with unfamiliar contracts, including direct deposits to crypto casinos.
