Japan and the United States are arranging talks between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and President Donald Trump on Tuesday in New York, where both are expected to address the United Nations General Assembly. Tokyo wants to coordinate with Washington on China, Taiwan and regional security before Trump meets Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday in the United States. The meeting would be at least the fourth in-person encounter between Takaichi and Trump since she became prime minister in October 2025, following talks in Tokyo, Washington and at the G7 summit in France. Their discussions also come amid Japan’s concerns about U.S.-China relations, the Strait of Hormuz and U.S. sanctions against International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane.
