Anthropic and OpenAI are exploring data-center agreements as small as 20 to 30 megawatts in the UK, Nordics and potentially the U.S., broadening their search beyond recent contracts worth hundreds of megawatts or gigawatts. Anthropic has discussed sites of that scale across the UK and Nordics, while OpenAI has examined comparable Nordic opportunities. Smaller powered facilities can deliver capacity more quickly than large single-campus projects and are particularly suited to inference, which can be distributed across separate chip clusters. Anthropic's roughly $45 billion Nscale agreement provides about 460 MW at a West Virginia campus, while OpenAI has committed through Stargate to add 3 GW in Georgia and 8 GW in Ohio after exceeding its original 10 GW target in April. OpenAI said it is building a diversified compute portfolio and assesses infrastructure options based on requirements, performance, reliability, timing and cost; Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment.
