The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has introduced a temporary Innovation Exemption allowing qualifying Tokenized Securities Venues to offer conditional trading in tokenized U.S.-listed equities, provided token holders receive the same rights as traditional shareholders. The measure, which can last up to five years, requires issuers to receive written notice before third-party tokenization and gives them 30 days to object. It excludes synthetic products that merely track share prices. Separately, S&P Global agreed to acquire smart-contract security provider OpenZeppelin, whose infrastructure has supported more than $37 trillion in cumulative value transfers. The announcements coincided with a broad crypto-market rebound and an 8.8% increase in DeFi-token market capitalization to $79.8 billion, as Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan characterized the developments as evidence of financial markets moving on-chain. Nasdaq also plans to introduce 23-hour weekday trading, subject to regulatory approval and market-infrastructure coordination, with a target launch date of December 6, 2026.
