Banks have sharply increased their share of Europe’s regulated crypto market, accounting for nearly 23% of providers listed under MiCA (EU crypto-market framework) by Sept. 16, up from about 17% on June 26. The number of banks on the register doubled to about 80 from roughly 40, while the overall number of listed crypto-asset service providers rose from 243 to 349. Non-bank providers remained the majority, but their share declined from about 84% to 77%. Germany drove much of the increase, adding Deutsche Bank and numerous Volksbank, Raiffeisenbank and VR Bank institutions. Deutsche Bank said it plans to launch digital-asset custody services for institutional and corporate clients in Europe and expects regulatory approval under MiCA in October. Unlike crypto companies, banks can enter the market through MiCA’s notification process rather than standard CASP authorization. Under Article 60, a credit institution must submit required information to its home regulator at least 40 working days before first offering crypto-asset services.
