Italian cable maker Prysmian has partnered with Rio Tinto to supply low-carbon aluminium electrical cables for an Amazon data centre in Ohio. The aluminium will be produced using ELYSIS inert-anode technology, a smelting process that Prysmian says eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions and releases pure oxygen instead. Prysmian said the project is the first known use of aluminium smelted with inert-anode technology in a data centre, demonstrating that data centres' carbon footprint can be reduced at the raw-material stage. The cables will be manufactured at Prysmian's Sedalia, Missouri, facility. The initiative builds on a collaboration Prysmian and Rio Tinto announced in March 2026. Joern Tinnemeyer, Vice President of Data Center Engineering at Amazon Web Services (AWS), connected the project with Amazon's 2040 net-zero target.
