Samsung Electronics’ chapter of the Samsung Group United Union approved a charter amendment limiting membership to employees in the Device Solutions (DS) Division, which oversees semiconductors. The measure passed with 96.3% support in the union’s fifth general assembly of 2026. Of 51,350 eligible voters, 28,680 participated in voting held from Sept. 16 through Sept. 19, with 27,618 supporting the change. Employees in the Device eXperience (DX) Division, which covers smartphones, televisions and home appliances, will no longer be eligible to join, and existing DX members are expected to leave. The union also approved no-confidence motions against Vice Chairwoman Lee Song-yi and Gwangju chapter head Lee Won-il, with 95.7% and 96.2% support, respectively. The restructuring follows disputes with other Samsung Electronics unions over performance-bonus distribution and bargaining strategy. The union said it would not negotiate jointly next year and would reorganize around the DS Division. The leadership conflict also includes allegations surrounding contracts for rally supplies with a company run by Chairman Choi Seung-ho’s father-in-law. Choi acknowledged the relationship and said the supplier offered the lowest bid, with the contracts approved by the joint action committee’s executive leadership. The largely DX-based Donghaeng union separately faces an internal leadership dispute ahead of elections scheduled for Sept. 21-28, while all five DS candidates recommended by the Samsung Group United Union won seats in the company-wide labor-management council election held Sept. 18.
