Lam Chun-yin, 32, a former relationship manager in the Consumer Banking Division at China Construction Bank (Asia)'s Causeway Bay retail branch, was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to accepting more than US$470,000 in Tether (USDT) bribes. The payments were made to authenticate false standby letters of credit and related documents used as guarantees in insurance-related investment transactions without the bank's authorization. Lam's duties did not include processing business credit-facility applications or handling letters of credit. The District Court used a six-year starting point, citing the risk to the bank and Hong Kong's reputation as an international financial center, then reduced the term by one-third for his guilty plea. Lam was also ordered to repay about HK$3.7 million to CCB (Asia). The Independent Commission Against Corruption has applied for arrest warrants for other people implicated in the scheme.
