Flock Safety has introduced a voluntary severance program as backlash over its license plate recognition technology weighs on employee morale. The company expects a significant portion of its 1,500-person workforce to seek buyouts and plans to offer them to a majority of interested employees. Wired reported that Flock would almost certainly need layoffs without the program. The pressure follows allegations of police misuse, including 46 cases identified by The Washington Post, decisions by Florida and Texas to stop using the technology, and the departure of 90 cities in August, according to an anti-surveillance advocacy group. CEO Garrett Langley said the backlash's biggest internal impact has been on morale.
