Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said Republicans need to do more to address affordability as high fuel and consumer prices intensify the economic debate with the midterms roughly six weeks away. Speaking Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, Barrasso said Americans, including Wyoming farmers and ranchers, were feeling financial pressure and that Republicans needed to get more money into people's pockets. He promoted the GOP-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which enshrined President Trump's 2017 tax cuts and created new deductions for overtime and tipped pay. The more than six-month war in Iran has also pushed up costs, with gasoline approaching $4.50 a gallon and annual inflation rising from 2.4% in February to 3.4% in August. Barrasso said reduced regulations and faster permitting could support increased oil production. President Trump has proposed $5,000 dividends for Americans if Republicans retain control of Congress, but Barrasso avoided committing to legislation for the plan. Recent Politico/Public First and NBC News polling showed substantial concern about Trump's handling of the economy.
