Zcash developers have set November 5 as the target for activating NU7, the network's next major upgrade, following a testnet rollout on October 6. The schedule was unanimously supported by the Zcash Foundation, Project Tachyon, Valar, ZODL and Shielded Labs, and follows a coinholder vote backing faster blocks and Zcash's existing halving schedule. NU7 would reduce target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, allowing services that wait for fixed confirmation counts to release funds in roughly one-third the time. It would also disable the older v4 transaction format without introducing a replacement, limiting wallet changes while potentially requiring updates to full nodes, indexers and block explorers. The upgrade would activate the Network Sustainability Mechanism, under which roughly 60% of transaction fees would be temporarily removed from circulation instead of paid to miners, then return through block rewards from February 2031 as issuance declines through successive halvings. The vote involved about 2.4 million ZEC, or 66% of the eligible pool; 98.9% supported the halving schedule and 96.6% favored February 2031 for fee reintroduction. Code completion is due September 30, while developers will make the final mainnet decision on October 20 by selecting an activation height. November 5 remains a target, not a confirmed launch date.
