Samsung Electronics’ largest labor union is reorganizing around the company’s semiconductor-focused Device Solutions (DS) division after internal conflict over performance-based bonuses, bargaining strategy and union operations. The Samsung Electronics Labor Union (SELU), a branch of the Samsung Group United Union (SGUU), a super-corporate union, approved a bylaw amendment limiting membership to DS employees at its fifth general meeting held from September 16 to 19. The amendment received 96.3% approval from 28,680 voters, representing 55.9% of 51,350 eligible voters. Existing members from the finished-product Device eXperience (DX) division are expected to be processed as withdrawals. Members also approved no-confidence motions against Vice Chairperson Lee Song-i and Gwangju branch head Lee Won-il, both affiliated with DX, with 95.7% and 96.2% support, respectively. The restructuring follows disputes over how performance bonuses should reflect different results across memory, System LSI, Foundry and DX businesses. The union has argued that bonuses should be linked to operating profit and previously announced plans to pursue separate DS bargaining in the 2027 wage and collective agreement talks. The SGUU, which once had more than 76,000 members and majority status, lost that position in June as membership declined. Supporters say a DS-focused structure will sharpen demands on semiconductor bonuses and treatment, while critics warn that dividing the organization by business division could reduce its bargaining power against Samsung Electronics. Conflicting interests between memory and non-memory businesses could also produce further internal disputes.
