Hyundai Engineering & Construction has signed the main contract for the Pohang AI Data Center in North Gyeongsang Province and begun installing precast concrete components. Ordered by AI Factory Pohang PFV, the facility is being built in the Gwangmyeong General Industrial Complex in Ocheon-eup, Nam-gu, Pohang, with a receiving capacity of 40 megawatts and an IT load of 32 megawatts. Construction began in June, the project has a 16.5-month schedule and operations are targeted for the second half of 2027. Designed for AI workloads rather than general-purpose computing, the center will support high-density GPU servers based on Nvidia's Vera Rubin chip. Its power density will be roughly 10 times that of a typical cloud data center, while liquid cooling and a planned power usage effectiveness of about 1.25 are intended to manage heat and energy consumption. Hyundai E&C is applying precast concrete to the entire structure, including slabs, walls and stairs, aiming to reduce structural work from about a year using cast-in-place construction to roughly two months. Neo AI Cloud plans to support next-generation GPUs and link GPU-as-a-Service with AI platform services for companies in South Korea and overseas. Hyundai E&C has built 19 data centers since 2004 and is also developing models linking data centers with renewable energy and small modular reactors.
