Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) has become the dominant lithium-ion cathode chemistry, with shipments projected to reach 5.24 million tons this year and account for 77% of the market. Energy storage system (ESS) growth, including demand from artificial-intelligence data centers and renewable power, is supporting adoption, while Chinese oversupply is shifting competition toward higher-density materials. South Korean battery makers are building LFP capacity and supply chains for North American ESS, including LG Energy Solution’s five-site network, whose Lansing, Michigan, plant produces LFP ESS and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) electric-vehicle batteries with expected annual cell capacity above 35GWh.
