J Ocean Shipbuilding has signed letters of intent (LOIs) with an Oceania shipowner for six tankers: two 157,000-ton crude oil carriers and four 114,000-ton crude oil and petrochemical product carriers. Including four similar vessels covered by a June LOI, the planned construction total has reached 10. The company secured the commitments before completing its acquisition of the Gunsan shipyard, where follow-up work continues after a June asset transfer agreement with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. J Ocean said Chairman Cha Jung-hoon’s backing is supporting the yard’s normalization, while its lack of a completed-vessel backlog enables fast delivery. The latest designs were developed by HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (097230), which is set to become an affiliate; the 114,000-ton design separates crude oil and petroleum products while meeting International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental rules. The company plans to pursue refund guarantees, overhaul the yard and facilities, and hire additional workers.
