Kwon Oh-hyun, former chairman of Samsung Electronics and chairman of the Orange Planet Foundation, has been appointed chairman of the board of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The board elected Kwon at its 298th extraordinary meeting in Seoul on Sept. 21, shortly after adding him as a board member at its 297th extraordinary meeting in August. His term runs through August 19, 2029. Kwon helped develop the world’s first 64Mb DRAM in 1992 and later led Samsung’s semiconductor operations and technology institute, where he spearheaded its memory-chip super-gap strategy. He is expected to work with KAIST President Bae Choong-sik, a mechanical engineer who took office in July, to strengthen research innovation, global competitiveness, technology commercialization and entrepreneurship.
