ABB launches Infinitus DC portfolio for AI data centers

  • ABB launched Infinitus, a DC portfolio for AI data center power architectures.
  • A 500 MW facility could gain 25 MW for IT loads from 5% efficiency improvement.
  • First complete Infinitus DC-native facilities are expected within two to three years.

ABB has launched Infinitus, an integrated direct-current (DC) portfolio designed to manage rising power demand in AI data centers and support both DC-native and hybrid AC/DC architectures. The portfolio combines medium-voltage power systems, AC-to-DC conversion, DC distribution and protection, and cooling optimization. ABB says its 800 VDC approach can reduce conversion losses and infrastructure footprint, while making more electricity available for computing. The International Energy Agency expects global data center electricity demand to more than double by 2030, and ABB estimates that 25% to 40% of new capacity installed that year could use DC distribution. Next-generation AI chips are expected to require 1 MW per rack or more, compared with almost 200 kW today. A BCG/ABB report found that DC distribution can deliver energy-efficiency gains of more than 5%; in a 500 MW data center, that could provide 25 MW of additional power for revenue-generating IT loads and more than $300 million in potential additional annual revenue. ABB expects Infinitus components to be produced over the next 12 months, with the first DC-native facilities using the complete portfolio expected to be installed and operational within two to three years. The launch extends ABB’s collaboration with NVIDIA, announced in October 2025, on 800 VDC architectures for gigawatt-scale AI facilities. ABB says the portfolio could also improve efficiency in industrial buildings, manufacturing, renewables and marine operations.
