Bitcoin briefly touched $155,000 in Bitfinex's BTC-PERP perpetual futures market while spot Bitcoin traded around $85,000, before the contract returned to prevailing market levels within seconds. An earlier account put the peak at $153,960. The move was isolated to the futures market and attributed to a lack of liquidity, with Bitfinex's BFX composite spot price index remaining below $84,406. The contract later traded around $85,038, up 5.55% over 24 hours. Thin order-book conditions and forced short liquidations may have amplified the distortion before arbitrage activity closed the gap in less than a minute. Coinglass data showed 117,116 leveraged traders were liquidated across markets over 24 hours, involving $688.07 million. Short positions accounted for $598.27 million, while Bitcoin-related liquidations totaled $354.93 million, including $338.15 million from shorts. The largest single liquidation was an $11.29 million BTC/USDT position on Binance. The episode did not change the broader market trend but underscored the risks of leverage in crypto derivatives.
