Nvidia Corp. CEO Jensen Huang says he would welcome a potential $8 billion personal tax bill under California’s proposed one-time billionaire wealth tax, calling the payment a privilege and responsibility. The measure, formally Initiative 25-0024, has not passed and will go before voters on Nov. 3, 2026. It would impose a 5% excise on accumulated wealth above $1 billion, determine residency through a Jan. 1, 2026 snapshot, and require payment in 2027, with installments available over five years. Huang’s estimated $184 billion fortune and potential liability would vary with Nvidia’s share price. The proposal contrasts with moves by Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Peter Thiel and other billionaires to cut ties with California before the snapshot. A Hoover Institution analysis said nearly 30% of the potential tax base had already departed, reducing projected revenue from $100 billion to about $40 billion and producing an estimated negative $24.7 billion net present value after lost future income taxes. Opponents, including Governor Gavin Newsom, warn of economic and migration risks, while supporters describe the measure as a correction to the relatively low share of wealth represented by billionaires’ state income-tax payments.
