European Union countries are still negotiating a proposed deal to remove Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman from the bloc’s sanctions list while maintaining measures against thousands of other individuals and organisations. EU ambassadors are due to resume talks in Brussels on Tuesday morning, meaning the proposal has not yet been finalized. An earlier report said envoys had agreed to the removals subject to objections, but diplomats later described the matter as ongoing deliberations. The proposed package would renew sanctions for three years, compared with the bloc’s usual six- or 12-month periods. The measures imposed on both men in 2022 include EU travel bans and asset freezes. France and Slovakia backed removing Usmanov, while Luxembourg sought Fridman’s delisting as well.
