AI code-generation tools are driving a two- to fourfold increase in new applications for iOS, Android and Chrome, according to an a16z newsletter cited by PANews on September 21. The surge in supply has not translated into higher downloads or user ratings, which have remained broadly unchanged. The share of apps reaching the basic success threshold of at least 10 ratings and 100 downloads has fallen sharply. The newsletter’s author calls the pattern "App-Slop," describing a market in which easier software production increases the volume of apps without a comparable rise in user engagement. In the United States, app revenue grew about 2% over the past 18 months, while time spent using apps increased 7%.
