Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Uruguay authorized Brazil to use the surplus from Uruguay's beef export quota for shipments to China. Lula made the announcement after meeting Yamandu Orsi in New York and said he had expressed gratitude for the authorization. China imposed an added 55% tariff in January on beef imports exceeding quota levels from key suppliers, including Brazil. Brazil had shipped 98.5% of its 1.1 million metric ton quota from November through June, and StoneX said in a July report that the quota would be filled by August. Brazil's total beef export volumes are expected to fall 10% year-on-year in 2026, according to industry group Abiec, amid restrictions imposed by Beijing and a recent curb on Brazilian meat exports to the European Union.
