Eli Lilly broke ground on a $6.5 billion manufacturing facility in Houston, Texas, that will produce Foundayo (orforglipron), its once-daily oral GLP-1 medicine, along with other small-molecule medicines and advanced therapeutics. The project is part of Lilly's more than $50 billion effort since 2020 to expand U.S. manufacturing and strengthen domestic pharmaceutical supply chains. Lilly expects the site to create more than 600 high-wage permanent jobs and 4,000 construction jobs. The company is providing $12.5 million to support workforce training with San Jacinto College, including a manufacturing training center, as well as a separate $2.5 million donation to the San Jacinto College Foundation for scholarships. Foundayo represents one in three new oral weight-loss drug starts in the United States, CEO David A. Ricks previously said, and generated $98 million in second-quarter revenue after its April U.S. launch. Lilly said the drug is under regulatory review in more than 40 countries, with a global rollout targeted for 2027. The Houston site is one of 10 U.S. manufacturing locations Lilly has announced since 2020 and the fifth intended to produce domestic active pharmaceutical ingredients. It will also make oligonucleotides and use machine learning, artificial intelligence, digital systems and advanced data analytics in production.
