South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service and the Credit Finance Association of Korea said on the 23rd they will simplify compensation for foreign-exchange losses from canceled overseas card payments. Card companies will upgrade systems to identify original transactions using merchant names, payment dates and amounts, even when approval numbers are missing or incorrect, and revise matching for partial cancellations. Transactions that remain unmatched will undergo staff review so eligible consumers can receive compensation without filing separate claims. Notifications will show the refunded amount in won and disclose when the cancellation-date exchange rate was used because the original payment could not be verified. Won-denominated notices and stronger consumer guidance will begin in September, while system upgrades and manual procedures are due to be completed by the end of this year for implementation from 2027. Overseas card spending rose from $19.22 billion in 2023 to $22.91 billion in 2025.
