Hayden Adams said Sam Bankman-Fried paid a seven-figure sum, previously described as more than $1 million, for the Uniswap.com domain after Uniswap Labs declined the original owner’s asking price. Adams said Bankman-Fried redirected the domain to SushiSwap, a Uniswap fork, in an effort to show off and antagonize the company. WIPO records show Uniswap Labs filed its complaint on May 18, 2021, against the domain’s registered holder, which had acquired the address on April 7, 2021. The domain had been registered in 2000 and redirected visitors to SushiSwap during the dispute. WIPO rejected the respondent’s claim that it lacked prior knowledge of Uniswap Labs, finding a likelihood of trademark confusion and bad-faith registration and use. The panel ordered the domain transferred to Uniswap Labs four months later. The decision does not identify Bankman-Fried as the respondent or establish that he acquired the domain. Bankman-Fried had already been involved with SushiSwap after its creator, Chef Nomi, handed him control during a September 2020 governance crisis. The episode adds to scrutiny of Bankman-Fried’s spending before FTX collapsed, while the domain dispute itself concerns brand protection rather than token supply or trading activity.
