Dutch police arrested two men accused of using counterfeit EURC tokens to obtain multiple Rolex watches from sellers on Marktplaats, the Netherlands’ large online marketplace. Investigators said the fake tokens were visually indistinguishable from legitimate EURC, causing sellers to release watches after seeing payments in their wallets, only to find the assets could not be converted into euros. The investigation began after multiple reports in August 2025. Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Geleen and a 45-year-old man from Leiden on Sept. 9. The Geleen suspect remains detained for 14 days after officers found firearms and drugs during a search of his home. The Leiden suspect was released but remains under investigation for alleged cryptocurrency fraud. Police warned users to make cryptocurrency payments only through familiar and trusted methods. Genuine EURC, issued by Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS, is backed by euro reserves and designed to be redeemable one-to-one for euros.
