A group of Senate Democrats urged President Trump to close loopholes in U.S. export controls that they say are allowing China to obtain advanced chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment for artificial intelligence development. The statement came ahead of Chinese leader Xi’s state visit to Washington and was signed by lawmakers holding senior positions on the Senate armed services, foreign affairs, intelligence and banking panels. The Democrats also called on Trump to challenge China over alleged intelligence support to Iran, pressure on Taiwan and assistance to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Their concerns echo those raised by Republican Rep. John Moolenaar, who has urged stronger controls on advanced AI products, cloud services and semiconductor manufacturing technology. Trump paused an expanded Commerce Department blacklist for one year in November as part of a deal with Xi in South Korea and has allowed China to buy hundreds of thousands of Nvidia H200 chips, with small batches reportedly entering mainland China in August.
