The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has canceled approximately 315,000 unauthorized Affordable Care Act marketplace enrollments covering more than 760,000 individuals and expects roughly $2.2 billion in advance premium tax credits to be returned. The cancellations complete an action previously described by the Trump administration as a planned anti-fraud initiative. CMS said it has terminated more than 200 non-compliant agents and brokers since January, issued 569 notices of intent to terminate this summer over incomplete applications, and will pause new 2027 registrations for agents and brokers without an active 2026 Exchange Agreement. New safeguards require identity verification through Login.gov or ID.me and electronic consumer authorization before an agent or broker acts on an application. CMS said it will continue working with insurers to identify unauthorized coverage and recover associated subsidies. Vice President JD Vance said the administration was ensuring subsidy recipients were eligible, while former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized the cancellations as a loss of insurance coverage for working families.
