CMS also said it would bar some 569 brokers after identifying statistically implausible numbers of 2026 applications that lacked information such as Social Security numbers. The agency is using an emergency-style rulemaking process to immediately freeze new Obamacare broker registrations nationwide, bypassing the usual notice-and-comment period. Brokers without a 2026 registration will face the freeze until February 1, 2027. CMS said unauthorized enrollments could generate as much as $6.6 billion in improper federal premium-tax-credit spending during the 2026 plan year. The action comes as millions have dropped coverage because of rising medical costs and the expiration of enhanced COVID-era subsidies. The Affordable Care Act, created under Democratic President Barack Obama, provides income-based subsidies, while Republican President Donald Trump has proposed changes that would make the plans less comprehensive.
