Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is among the officials reportedly under consideration for President Donald Trump's planned AI czar role, although no appointment has been finalized and the White House has rejected unconfirmed personnel reports as speculation. Trump announced Sept. 19 plans to name an AI czar and establish an AI Force, but has not disclosed its structure, authority or membership. White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios, Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor and National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross are also reportedly being considered. Bessent has expanded his involvement in AI policy, including discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on a formal bilateral AI dialogue and a possible notification mechanism for incidents with national-security implications. The prospective role would replace the AI czar position previously held by David Sacks, who left the government post in March after reaching the 130-day limit for special government employees but remains a co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
